Leading the Trend: Ulysse Nardin Introduces the New Generation of Freak X Watches

More Compact. More Technologically Advanced. More Bizarre.

This year marks two significant anniversaries for Ulysse Nardin: the brand’s 180th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the Freak collection. To celebrate these milestones, Ulysse Nardin has launched a new series of Freak watches. We’ve already seen the limited-edition Super Freak and the playful Freak [X Gumball 3000].

These three watches come in three colorways, feature interchangeable straps, upgraded movements, and a redesigned, more compact 41mm case (from 43mm) with a sapphire crystal.

Unleash Your Wild Side In hindsight, it’s easy to see how the Freak drove the watchmaking world wild when it launched in 2001. It originated as a carousel “tourbillon” project by Ulysse Nardin, based on an idea by Carole Forestier, who had just won the Abraham-Louis Breguet Foundation Prize for her central carousel tourbillon design.

Ludwig Oxlin subsequently refined Forestier’s ideas, moving the mainspring below the movement to improve power reserve and modifying the inline gear train and regulator to allow it to function as a time display, among other things.
